On Sad Music

Listen While You Read
I recently doomscrolled all the way to a video of a man talking about his love for happy music.
He said he'd stopped listening to sad stuff — it just made him feel worse. Now, he just listens to happy music when he's in a bad mood and immediately feels better.
I'm glad for him, that he and so many others have feelings that work like that. Mine are leeches, draining me, screaming to be heard.
His video looped in my head for days, seeding doubt in my music taste and the songs I write. It made me pull out my iPod from high school.
I shuffled through my old, heartbreaking playlists. Artists I still listen to. When I say I wouldn't have made it through my toughest moments without those songs, I mean it.
Our music isn't for everyone. We know a lot of people don't 'get' it. We all consume art in our own ways for our own reasons. We write songs for people with big feelings that need to be heard and felt.
Music is the alchemy oof emotions into sound. If you're one of us, we hope our songs can be there for you when you need them.
Hi, I'm Laura and this is my song Dust (about my waves of depression) by my GF and I's band Outer Shapes. Streaming everywhere.
