Being at a Psych Ward

Listen While You Read
A few weeks ago I visited my close friend in the psych ward where he was involuntarily admitted.
I cut the strings off his favorite sweats and brought them in so he'd stay warm at night.
He slept with a sharpened pencil in his hand, afraid of his roomate.
There we around 30 patients in there, but only 2-3 had anyone visit during the visiting hour.
What do you say during a visit? How do you show them how loved they are? I brought my tarot cards and favorite book for him.
Over the days I was there we had important talks in heavy plastic chairs.
We talked about the pains of life to a depth I usually reserve for my music and art.
The rawness of our chats was cathartic exposing those festering feelings and releasing pressure to keep things lighthearted.
I know his soul needed that space. So did mine. That's why I make music.
